Spoilers Ahead!

The time has come...

Death Bringer is trickling into some shops ahead of schedule... I was in my local bookstore today and there it was- out two days before it should be. I glared at the book, and the book blushed, for such is the power of my glare.

The official launch is today- Wednesday- in Dublin. And then Thursday it is finally, and officially, unleashed.

So the comments section for THIS blog entry are reserved for MILD SPOILERS. There is to be NO casual conversation here- that's what the previous entry is for. THIS entry is for discussions about the book. Even so, try to exercise SOME caution, because you just KNOW that someone is going to stumble onto it by accident, or they're going to pop in before they've FINISHED and then they're going to be horrified that the ending is now ruined for them...

So. If you haven't read Death Bringer, continue using the previous comments section. But once you have read it... discuss it here.

And now I'm going to bed.

BEST FRICKIN' BOOK YET. I love it, every single thing about it, the battles, the characters, the twists, OH MY GOD THE TWISTS! Or more specifically THE TWIST. THE GREAT BIG GOD DAMN SCARYILY AMAZING TWIST. Ya'll know the one I mean.

Anyway, if you couldn't tell, I love it.

Right, now, bed, Death Bringer may have stolen my sleep for the night...

Can't wait for The End of The World. I suspect that the remnant will be cut from Taniths soul by Nye??? just a guess, but it talks an awful lot about finding the soul. Kinda hoped that would be in Deathbringer, but Tanith didn't come into it much.

Kribu said...

I am sort of hoping that's why we got Nye back, too. But yeah, while I was looking forward to Tanith, I don't think a subplot of that size and importance (as it has to be, doesn't it) would have fit into this particular book in any way. There was plenty going on as was.

NOOOO Derek how could u break Val and Fletcher up???!!!
The book was great by the way. When i was reading it it fealt alot different than the others

Hey Derek, random question, with tours, I know you're busy and all (being simply amaaaazing and whatnot), but you mentioned on youtube a while back you would do another Australia tour... is that possibly for SP book 7? I was at your Riverbend signing in Brisbane when Dark Days came out :D do you think you would go to different places the next time? High school would make getting to book signings hard depending on the times :-(

. said...

Also, Derek, HORROR MOVIES.
I loved the ones you wrote (Dead Bodies and Boy Eats Girl for those of you who don't know...) and I saw this really good, if not slightly cheesy one last weekend. It was a 2006 remake of the 1977 film "The Hills Have Eyes". My God, incredibly gory and disturbing, but I have a twisted mind when it comes to humour sometimes, at one point this guys shooting someone (notice the incredibly obscure description is used with the utmost subtlety :P) and this guy preivously was all anti-guns and I laughed to myself and was like "This film promotes the propaganda of positive gun usage." You should have seen it, it was hilarious, he was covered in blood, shooting the living hell out of this person while this uproarious gloriful music played. My God, it was hilarious. But I highly recommend it if you like some gory stuff with a good scare.

Also, Alien, Aliens and Gremlins.

'Nuff said.

LOL I remember I developed a fear of Gremlins when I was 3 that lasted for like 8 years XD I had a paranoit fear that I could see glowing red Gremlin eyes near my bed... LOL tricksy imaginations *shakes head at the very notion of such a thing*

Anyone who hasn't seen Gremlins, watch it. Gemlins 2 is more comdedy, but both films make me laugh a bit. But the first one still freaks me out... a bit LOL

Oh, and Derek, videogames... PLAY VALVE STUFF. Like Team Fortress 2, Portal and Left 4 Dead if you haven't already. Very good games.

Wow, that's a long list Derek sorry.

BUT FULFIL THE LIST AND BECOME A TRUE HORROR MOVIE PERSON.

Oh wait, you wrote two horror movies so that AUTOMATICALLY makes you a horror-film person *realises I am undermining the list*

BUT DO IT ANYWAYS

IF YOU CAN SPARE TIME FROM BEING AWESOME THAT IS

Hi all, this is my first time posting but i've been reading the blog for ages :) I just finished Death Bringer, and i recognised the name Kallista Pendragon! Yay for you! You must be thrilled! Anyway, i've got to say the funniest part was when Valkyrie was talking to her parents 0n pages 418-422ish. Hilarious! Thanks once again Derek, for another fantastic book, and PLEASE COME TO AUSTRALIA! xx

Sabremae said...

Please excuse the "xx" at the end of that last comment, I don't normally put things like that, i just got a little excited!

HI DEREK!

I posted a comment on one of your other posts but you didn't reply. :'( *sniffs*

Anyway! I have a couple of questions for you about the Skulduggery Pleasant movie.

1) Do you actually see a movie being made in the future?
2) Will the auditions be held in Ireland or elsewhere?
3) Will you accept videoed (That is a word! I checked!!) auditions?

Thanks :).

Derek Landy said...

Kesenia- Hopefully there will be a movie made, but it's a slow process and I'm taking my time with it. Because of that, I have no information whatsoever about any auditions! But if there ARE auditions, it won't be for another year or two, at least.

Nicole Fudge (Nicolette Croga) said...

Oh I'd love to see a skulduggery movie :D

I just hope it can keep it's humor because I love the witty humour in these books ^^

Especially in Death Bringer Derek it was the funniest book in the whole series ... and deffinetly the funniest book I have ever read

Hope you have a great tour by the way :D

I can't come to see you in London this year (because I have a new baby sister who can't really go on trains) But I came last year and loved it so I hope I'll be able to come see you next year ..

I'm really not expecting either Valkyrie or Skulduggery to die until the last book.

Not that I'd want either of them to die then, either, but it'd be hard to see how the last trilogy could really work without one or the other of them...

Kirsty said...

Derek,

OMG! I mean, I must admit, although I rave about your awesome, amazing books to my friends, I vowed to never think of you as "the Golden God" I mean...I have dignity, it's one of the things I'm really proud of...but after reading Death Bringer...I'm about an inch away from referring to you as the Golden God. Oh, and THAT'S quite a compliment, trust me :)

Also, GLAD to have Fletcher in my country...if only he were real...damn.

Speaking of my country, tour here again! I missed out on seeing you in Australia last time, because I live in South Australia...and I'm almost certain I can convince my parents to change our annual Melbourne holiday to coincide with your touring-ness, should you fail once more o make it to little ol' Adelaide. Man, I know how Valkyrie felt living in Haggard before Skulduggery came along...

Also, Skulduggery...WOW. I like it.

I like the Jitter Girls too. Creepy in a freaking awesome way...I like it.

I'm gonna be so depressed when Skulduggery Pleasant ends... but I somehow pulled through the end of Harry Potter, so I should be able to find a way....maybe....

LOTS OF AUSSIE (that's just me hinting for you to speak to your people about coming down here again SOON) LOVE,

KIRSTY!!!!

ViennaJarred said...

Oh, my GOD.
That book was EPIC of epic proportions.
It was like Derek said: at the end of the book, the reader will whisper, "Oh hell..." very, very quietly. And do you know what I did? I said to myself (very, very quietly) "Oh, crap...". Because I honestly don't see how they're going to stop Kenny. But that what makes the Golden God, the Golden God! He dumps the gang in a situation where they will most probably die, and then hauls them out again with a slice of witty banter thrown in on the side.
And I recognized Kallista straight away! Like Sabremae said, yay for you! You must be so proud (if you've read the book, of course)!
I probably shouldn't say this because your ego will become the size of the whole galaxy, rather than just a planet, but I'ma gunna say it anyway.
Derek Landy, you are AMAZING.
Now get back to writing the next book!
Or sleeping, y'know, whichever one works best for you.

Octa said...

@ Derek I know you're on tour and stuff but when you get back could you answer my quibble about the 7/8 Dead Men? Is Ravel a Dead Man and if he is why wasn't he in ghastly's list?

PLEASE REPLY DEREK!

Also I would visit you at Brent Cross tomorrow but it's on a Saturday. Tour schedules are cruel heartless things.

Glad to see that I'm not the only one who's noticed the whole Skul/Val thing, had me worried that it was just wishful thinking :3

This book was so perfect, page 302 made me tear up ;_;

Loved the shower bit though, it hinted quite a bit :X

This book made me respect Fergus a lot more.

There's too much to say about a 602 page book!!

Sparky Braginski said...

I just finished, but I posted when I was half way through. I'M SO SORRY I FORGOT IN THE HEAT OF THE MOMENT THAT IT WAS ONLY MILD SPOILERS!! To whomever it may concern I'm sorry for ruining it. But I must add that if I had been Kallista Pendragon and I read my name in your book, I would spend the next five minutes screaming and rolling on the floor. Fortunately I'm NOT her because I read during a test when I had finished and had spare time to read at the end.

P.S. I REALLY AM SO SORRY!!!!

P.P.S. Actually it's anyone who read my comment and is outraged by my mad blurting's fault because Derek specifically mentioned for people who've finished the book only.

P.P.P.S I do in fact realise that the P.P.S puts me in the wrong because I posted before I finished.

P.P.P.P.S That Requiem Ball would've been fun to go to...

P.P.P.P.P.S *!!!SPOILER ALERT!!!* Fergus is magic. OKAY NOW I'M DONE!

Sparky Braginski said...

I just looked back at my post and found out it had been removed *blush* for too much made blurting. So everything's okay...

mujie said...

Ah. Completely forgot it wasn't complete spoilers. The dedication was good. Probably the nicest-ish dedication Derek's ever written. I guess I should have blanked some of the words out, those whop read up to page 300/302 would know what I mean.

mujie said...

And the twist was great. I mean, it literally hasn't been done before. It's never been tried before. Usually. Not many programmes I know. Of course it would make a great plotline, but even Harry Potter didn't try that. So if you didn't get what I was trying to say, the twist, you'll never get. You'll realise you've always wanted a twist like that for a book like Skulduggery Pleasant, but you can't suspect it because it hasn't been tried before. And is anyone else about to have de ja vu?... Usually. Not many programmes I know...

I posted on the other page but since this is for spoilers...

I LOVED the stabs at Twilight! It was the funniest thing I've read in ages! It was probably because a long time ago (four years infact) that I was obsessed with Twilight and now I absolutely love mocking it about how stupid it was! Ahhhh the whole Cealan eternal love bit... I was in stitches, I had to stop reading because I was almost crying...

I also was very much not expecting the HUGE twist in the middle! When it came I was like OMG :O now way... it couldn't be true! but then... of course everything made alot more sense about Skulduggery's past...

I really enjoyed the MASSIVE battle scene at the end! I could definately see that as a movie! although, it would not be PG... probably not even M or MA... definately R rated violence, very horrific and incredibly enjoyable. :)

Again, Mr Landy, thankyou for delivering a book beyond expectations. Its going to be a long wait until March...

Ummm if you're reading this... will you be doing a 'End of the World' tour? 'cause I live in Australia and next year I'm going over to Europe for three months around that time... and we are visiting Ireland... I may just have to stalk you...
Thanks again!!! :D

I never stopped laughing throughout the book, my parents thought I was crazy...I really did get some weird looks =/
I love all the valduggery teasing =P
Now...I have to wait an entire YEAR just for the next book =(

Hey, like Sabremae this is my first time post too, so how to begin....
AWESOME BOOK!!!!!
Loved it!!! Started reading at 6am and read without stopping until 11am when I finished. This did mean I missed breakfast, which, I know, wasn't good, but I just couldn't put the book down!!!
The 'twist' actually reminded me of the twist in the video game Star Wars KOTOR if anyone has played it; in my opinion it is the best video game ever.
Excellent book!!!!

Hi guys! I'm feeling quite recovered from two night's in a row of hiding under the covers with a flashlight. Mr. Derek Landy, would it be to much trouble if next time you came to Australia you didn't just visit boys primary schools. I have a whole PILE of people who want to jump on you and make you hug and sign things repeatedly. Mainly me. I have ONE complaint about the book though. HOW COULD YOU WRITE A SP BOOK WITHOUT TANITH AT ALL!!!!!!!!! I know she's evil and all, but I have this absolutely perfect way for her to be good again. The fight scene at the end was super double uber cool!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But I don't think Val should be so eager to do that again. Got to have breakfast. BYE!!!

Happy_Sadist said...

I was waiting for the "You killed Kenny" joke all book.
Sorry Derek, I am disappoint.

But other than that I believe this book filled the body quota quite admirably, now you are going to have to invent some new characters to kill off in unpleasant ways. Now where have I heard that before?

blubber2000 said...

Im soo bloody shocked at what you did in that poor book, what could it ever have done to you that you had to make it so fantastically brilliant?

*Sighs*

Right, i'm not denying that fact that I loved it to bits and its the most amazingist book I have ever read (so far :D ) and I cant wait to get it signed on the 16th. But I probably sat there on that one spot on the stairs staring at the book for about ten minutes.

My dad's bringing me on the 16th, i'm already wondering what to wear and it's twelve whole days away, on a Friday (its a half day in school), AND i'm off on monday. BEST WEEKEND EVER!!!

I can't wait ;D.

I wanted to go to the London one, but mum dragged us out to Wells to do shopping :(

Buut, we saw a sign in a carpet shop that said 'Remnant sale', and we immediately had our sad Skulduggery brains start to think 'I wonder what those Necromancers have been up to now...'
Me and my sis laughed.
And then I remembered that both signings I could go to were on that day.

The sparrows fly south for winter... I've said that so many times and STILL no one has gotten to that part. I'd love a follow through on that line. That would be EPIC. Next time you come to Australia (soon?) and you're signing my book and while your talking I will suddenly yell out 'THE SPARROWS FLY SOUTH FOR WINTER!' and hit the friend that I bring with me. Derek and I will laugh and my friend will scowl because she will be on the receiving end of a funny joke and Derek Landy and her best friend will be laughing at her and she won't be able to join in. TeeHee.

Hi all! Death Bringer was wicked!

And this is a message for the wonderful Mr. Landy. The choreographing of the fight scenes in the books is undoubtedly fantastic, but I have alsways been confused when you use the phrase 'she/he twisted her hips into him/her/it'. How exactly does that look in real life? I always have trouble picturing it in real life.
If you could possibly tell us, I'm sure we'd all be eager to know.
Thanks!

Can I just ask if I was the onyl one who felt awful for China? I mean, I know that what she did was repulsive and disgusting, but... Idk. I guess I'm biased. China's my favourite character, more because I find her so interesting and I love her story. It was still devastating though.

Bethany, no, you weren't the only one. She's gone through such an interesting development through the books (er, not to say she's become all nice, because, well, no), and now to lose both the people who seemed to have become the closest things she had to friends, *and* her home and her life's work - the library - all in one go...

I did feel awful for her, yes. And I wonder just how much Skul's not being a hypocrite, and his own past deeds, will end up mattering .. *can* he bring himself to, well, not forgiving China (I doubt something like that can ever be forgiven) but to move past it? (I can't see him kill China. He's not that much of a hypocrite, surely - and I think that if he'd wanted to, he'd have done it right there and then, impulsively.)

Much love to you Mr Landy. You're brilliant. Hoping to see you this Saturday. Even if I have to WALK there.

So slight spoilers are allowed here, yes? Good. I just really gotta say it:

Congratulations, Kallista!

And Derek...really? Was that really necessary? All those BOOKS! My gosh, that`s like the ultimate sin! Be ashamed. Be very ashamed. Naughty.

That twist really blew me away, though. Wow. Never would`ve guessed that. Bloody brilliant, as always.

Clarabelle was simply hilarious, no surprise there. She´s really becoming one of my favorites.

I`m so looking forward to whatever is going to happen next in this amazing series.

So, if that was too spoilery, just edit out all the parts you deem unfitting and reduce it down to the most simple fact:

Derek Landy is brilliant. Happy now? Great =)

Trying not to be too spoilery but damn, Skulduggery just got even hotter :D

Anonymous said...

Hi Derek Landy and fellow readers,

I was not planning to post anything on here, but I can’t help myself. I just read a certain section of the novel, in which a certain something is revealed about Skulduggery (I know I can post spoilers, but I’m trying to remain vague), and I needed to tell Mr. Landy that IFREAKED out. I cannot recall ever having such a strong reaction to a book. This is unprecedented.

I read the last sentence of the chapter, where it’s revealed, and I couldn’t read on. I started cursing and shouting and sputtering and shaking my poor copy, and then I was trembling, and then I was shouting a bit more, and my cat was very startled, and after a good five minutes (which is a very long time indeed) I was able to stop shouting. And I became very quiet, and I shook, and I wept. I was nauseous. And then I picked up the book and read, and Valkyrie spoke to Skulduggery and I started crying again.

"You need to find yourself a new hero."

I’ve never felt so shocked – so utterly confused. It goes beyond plot twists. Plot twists make you go, “Wow! I never saw that coming!” This made me go, “CANNOT. COMPUTE.”

I commend you, Mr. Landy, for revealing that particular bit of information at such a stellar time. You technically had nine books to reveal it, and I think you chose the right one. I’m only on page 400, as I’ve forced myself to wait until tomorrow to finish it, but I’m looking forward to seeing how Valkyrie and
Skulduggery’s relationship will continue to develop. I love the humor, witty dialogue, action, and numerous plots of this series as much as any reader – of course. But at the center of it all I think their relationship is the most important element of the books, and it just got way more complex.

Also, it’s funny, because I remember complaining to a friend and fellow reader last year about Skulduggery’s reaction at the end of the fifth book. (His reaction: “This is insane. You can’t be here. This is… You can’t be here.) I said I thought the reaction was out-of-character for Skulduggery, because it made him sound like his fear put him in denial, which is WEAK. And Skulduggery is never weak!

Now I understand. It was disbelief, because Vile’s return should have been impossible. It wasn’t weak.

And now all the scenes in the fourth book, when Skulduggery acted unhinged, make total sense. I thought you just threw them in because you thought they were funny, or you ran out of things to write or something, and I was doubting you as a serious storyteller. And I am SO SORRY. This is a sincere apology.

I hope that, one day, I can write stories that will make readers shout and curse and cry and then be marvelously happy about it.

You are simply fantastic. Fantastic, Mr. Landy.

Derek, in The End Of The World is Kenny going to tell the world about magic and Valkyrie being Stephanie (or Stephanie being Valkyrie)?

And I'm still amazed that Valkyrie and Skullduggery hasn't destroyed the world. With Skulduggery as Lord Vile and Valkyrie as Darquesse it could be doen easily.

Okay, I finished Death Bringer yesterday night :)
It was amazing. Simple as that.
But before I start ranting, I have to admit,
that I am mad at the time the book took to ship to Germany.
I pre ordered it, and it arrives 8 days later.
A year ago, I pre ordered it and it arrived on the 7th September. I read that book on a school trip to Berlin. And guess who was in Berlin during that time? Yes, thats right, the golden god. I only go to Berlin 1-2 a year, but of course once I go to Berlin get my Mortal Coil copy AND the author of that book is in town. I couldn't leave, because it was a school trip. Why?
Okay now to the actual review.

I got Death Bringer yesterday 4 pm. I had guitar lessons and tons of homework to do, however I finished all the 600 pages of glory before 12 pm, on a school day. I messed up in school today, but I blame that on the book.

The cover + backcover of the book are amazing. Death Bringer just looked so perfect, I ran around my house and hold the book against different backgrounds. It looks so surreal. It's perfect.
Honestly it didn't hit me who was on the backcover until I finished the book and was reflecting about what I read.

While reading I noticed a lot of small details, that made me incredibly happy, but somewhat sad at the same time. The perfect example is how Valkyrie happens to be so normal at some points. She wants to check the offer for sunglasses at the airpot, she tests who one of Skulduggery's hats looks on her. She has developed an aspect of her "normal" or "mortal" life. This depressed me, because in the first few books she almost hated these points of an ordinary life. She has changed. She is more mature and sarcastic then she ever was. I love it.
There were some Valduggery moments as well. I don't ship them, but I found them cute and appreciate their friendship growing.

Okay there were 3 points I found tremendously shocking. I will try hard to only spoil mildly.
1. Skulduggery`s secret. After I finished that chapter, my hands were seriously trembling. I went downstairs and sat next to my dad. I continued reading. I stopped. I reviewed all I knew of the subject so far. I would have never seen that coming.
It was epic.

2. Fergus. Enough said. Just wow.

3. What happens to China at the end. That hurt me deeper then any death in the last few books. I do not know why, but it just hurts

Okay I have come to a conclusion. Sorry for the hideous long post.
Credit to anyone who read all of it.
Greetings from Germany,
Amelie
(sorry for awkward spelling mistaakes, english is not my native language)

P.s: Listening to the Playing with Fire audiobook right now.

Hey! I'm new here. And I'm a Dutchie. Probably one of very little - if any at all. I read the book and it was AWESOME. Dude. That was incredible.
Yes, Golden God, You know how to Write.

I like Necromancy. It's cool and powerful and.. Well. The thing is, I DON'T like Necromancers. Not because they're not nice or so, but because they're STUPID. Yeah, that's right. STUPID.
They want to kill half of humanity while they could just kill, ehm, ants. Ants or lice. Yeah. 3 billion lice or three billion ants. Of course, I wouldn't say this if I were an ant, but WHO CARES if you kill ants? If you'd destroy 3 billion PEOPLE, however, the world would really be f***ed up. I understand you want to be immortal, I honestly do. But this is just stupid.
But well, why am I complaining? Without your stupidity, Necromancers, we wouldn't have had this AMAZING book.
Or..
Golden God, do you intend to say ants have no souls?!
Well, I'll leave that one to you.

And I know something, people. I know something. In one of the next books, Val will say: "Skulduggery, you know, the reason of your existance. It's not Tenebrae."
And everything will be like OMG, huh, wth is going on?
And then she'll say: "You weren't killed by Serpine's red right hand. You were killed because the dagger you reached for when you saw your family being murdered was dipped in poison. Serpine only used his right hand on you AFTER you returned."
So, Golden God, tell me. Is this going to happen? Did you make a mistake? Or, most likely, did I make a mistake?

Anyway, these were questions i've been longing to ask. Just know your books are AMAZINGLY ADDICTIVE, EXTRAORDINARILY EXCITING and AWESOME!!!

loved the book, all the spoilers, accidentaly deleted my comment so retyping it, what is gonna happen with her mirror, cos its coming alive, and cos its her copy, it has a bit of darquesse in it to, is it gonna be able to do magic, cos darquesse has shown she isnt bound by normal magic 'rules' if you think about it

Vehemens said...

Yeah I'm waiting for the reflection-plot to unravel too... Things've been going on with that thing for so long and still I can't predict what the reason behind that is. I think, maybe the vision-Darquesse is the reflection, but I'm not so sure after reading the last Death Bringer-chapter. I'm really excited about the reflectionplot. It must be genius.

Anyway, I was quite surprised the mysterious golden-eyed man didn't show up in Death Bringer. Curious..

Vehemens said...

I am referring to "Soon, the voice told her, soon."

..If I remember it right.

Kribu said...

I'm so incredibly curious about the reflection! But I'm not even going to try and guess what's up with it any more - I've realised I'm completely unable to guess anything in this series. :D

I am referring to "Soon, the voice told her, soon."

That. Yes. It worries me, to be honest! There seems to be a side to Valkyrie that loves the power Darquesse has just a tiny bit too much, even if she's - so far - still able to keep it down. But, yeah... We'll see, I expect, and I can hardly wait!

This was such an amazing book! One of my favourites so far! It was like everything I wanted to happen all in one book! Plus I think Skulduggery dancing around the room singing Man In The Mirror would have been rather appropriate for this book! (':
And this book kept me up until 2.30am finishing the book (': It's so addictive!
Plus!! I went to your talk last night at the Univertisty of Hertfordshire!! You were hilarious and I'm seriously chuffed that you've actually read my fan fic :3

What do you guys think? Have animals got souls? They should cause in the books the soul is a thing which keeps the body alive and animals are alive.
So are human souls different..?

See my first post (five posts above or so) to see how I think about it.

Now what do YOU guys think?

So I'm rather late commenting on this, I'm aware. However, I do not care.

But I just wish to say that Death Bringer was absolutely superb. Despite how much it made me want to punch things, it was utterly fantastic. It was just *so* good.

I loved the little Skul/China hint at the Requiem Ball, but it didn't really cheer me up after the end :( *sighs*
I just hope she is still going to appear in the following books. She's such an awesome character.

Oh, and Val is a stupid bitch, yay :D I didn't think it was possible, but I do hate her even more than I did before ^^
There is no excuse for what she did to Fletcher Ò_ó

This is my favorite book of the series! This and Dark Days. WOW the ending... with China... I didn't expect that to happen for another book! Lots of really good insights to characters, especially Skulduggery and China. Fletcher has grown up a lot, too. In Faceless Ones I didn't like him cause he was constantly annoying and whining. But now I genuinely feel sorry for him! What he said to Valkyrie during THAT scene, was true. And like @jimmy said in his long-as-hell comment (read every word of it! ;] ) the taxi driver put it really well. Sometimes, she's just not the perfect hero we want her to be.

What I love about Derek's writing, apart from the crazy plots (that TWIST! I'll talk about that later), and the humor, is the characters. They're all so individually unique, and no two characters are quite the same. And they're all perfectly flawed. I never like perfect characters, its very unrealistic. It dosen't convince you that this story is plausible (although magic is, sadly, not very plausible either). Personality-wise, Val and Skul are very real. They aren't JUST the hero or JUST the villain; they're both. They're good people but they have their shortcomings. I think that one of the things that mark someone as a good writer, is that they don't make their characters too perfect.

About that HUGE twist in the middle of the book. I DID NOT SEE THAT COMING!! o.o It was the end of a chapter, and I actually stopped there and stared at that line for a good 30 seconds. WOW. Just... WOW. It would actually explain a lot in the previous books, so no plot holes there.

Only three books left after this one... I will be 19 and in my second year of uni when the last one comes out. That seems so far away, but it really isn't. Only three more years! D:

jameslilith said...

For such a great author, you can write some pretty crap stuff, you know.
Mortal Coil= Crap.
Death Bringer= Crap.
The way you COMPLETELY ruined the entire series? Yeah, good job.
Caelan had the potential to be an interesting character, but you had to turn him into a wussy arsehole who falls in love with Little Miss I'm the Best At fucking everything.
i'm so pretty and everyone comments on my amazing skill and i'm gonna destroy the world and save it and blah blah blah i'm a great big sister and i have two mega hot boys chasing me and oh yeah did i mention how BEAUTIFUL AND PERFECT i am?
seriously, DB was the biggest fail i have ever read. i threw the damn book in the bin, it was that bad.
you completely changed the characters personalaties. it was like an entirely different book.
and the big revelation at the end?
biggest overstatement of the century.
and having valkyrie kill caelan. really? the guy she's been kissing and leading on for a few months or however long its been (its really unclear on that) means so little to her that she can just kill him without a second thought.
and all that crap about killing 3billion people? wreath was a good character before that. and skulduggery? OH MY GOD, seriously? turn the "good guy" into the big baddy of the books? HAHAHAHA FAIL.
when he finds out china killed his family... oh, how sad for me... lets go back to my car now and completely forget it ever happened. and valkyrie, perfectperfectperfect valkyrie, WANTING to feel the power of darquesse WANTING to kill a shitload of people...
the only reason i'm here, complaining is because someone needs to tell you you're going downhill. you used to be great. now you're just an egotistical dick who writes violent, pathetic, mary-sue crap and gets paid for it.

Kribu said...

I have a vague feeling that you didn't really like the book, jameslilith. :D

More seriously, I wondered about this with Mortal Coil already - that there will be people who loved the first trilogy but who will be turned off by the second, as it did look to be a rather radical departure from the much more straightforward children's fantasy of the first three books, where the baddies were baddies and the good guys were slightly flawed, but still very clearly the good guys.

I love the change - I liked the first three books, and enjoyed them, and had fun reading them, but it's the second trilogy that pushed this series firmly into my top three ever - but it is very much a matter of taste.

For me, the changes make sense (I figure Val started changing, really changing, into a far more self-absorbed, colder, less empathetic person during those ten or eleven months between The Faceless Ones and Dark Days, when she was going after Skul's head with a single-minded determination and not really caring about much else - there were the seeds for it there before, but that, together with the usual teenager self-absorbedness, was for me a huge factor, and then of course the Darquesse realisation), and I'm fascinated by the inner struggles between the dark side and the "good" side. I want to know how this plays out.

I want to know how deep into the darkness Val will slip (and she will slip deeper, it's pretty obvious) before she can find the strength to punch her inner demon in the face, the way Skul did - and even he, very clearly, cannot get rid of it all that easily.

I can see why there are those considering Val a Mary Sue by now - she's still adored by a lot of the other characters. I don't think she is, though, if only because the only people left now who think nothing but well about her are the people who aren't exactly paragons of virtue themselves (Skul) or people who don't know either anything about some sides of her (her parents) or the full extent of how much she's changed inside (China, Ghastly; random acquaintances who just see a pretty, feisty girl).

Fletcher called her out on her issues (and I was SO glad he did - someone had to!), so it's not like everyone is blind to the problems. And she's at least aware of some of those issues herself, and keeps struggling with them - she certainly doesn't seem to think she's perfect herself. Just, well, a self-absorbed teenager harbouring a psychopathic mass-murderer in her, which never helps.

Also, I adore Skul, but he's really not been the best influence on Val from the very beginning. He may be on a path to redemption (or at least trying to be) himself, but the path he's taken Valkyrie on is anything but that for her. Again, I find this fascinating, and I'm so curious to see where it goes.

Anyway, yeah, long comment is long and I don't expect anyone to agree - there are as many ways to interpret books and characters as there readers, and no one can say one way is more valid than another. The levels of violence, and that big fight in the end, where Darquesse was practically getting off on it, that can certainly be enough on its own to turn people off, in addition to the general turn towards a much darker story, with much darker characters.

Kribu, what an intelligent reply to a quite rude comment.
Opinions are always appreciated and valid, immature profanity is not.

Kribu said...

As someone who has written fanfic for a few years now, I firmly believe that rudeness means that the writing meant so much to the reader that it drove them into a heightened emotional state, which is better than indifference.

Somehow, it's always easier to believe this when it's someone else's writing that happens with, though...

I am i the only one who noticed that Derek missed one the most important patterns in his books?!?!
DEREK!!! HELP!!!
Tanith didnt get tortured!
Obviously she didnt show up at all, im not here to point out the obvious.
People whov been to book signings with Derek have probably heard that because he couldnt kill Tanith in book1, he decided to torture her in every book onwards.
And so he has until Death Bringer.

All in all i LOVED death bringer, maybe the best yet, biggest secrets and twists :D
But lacking in some of the most crucial areas, to me anyway. Things like tanith not being tortured, not realy seeing finbar, even though hes in there he never actualy sees Skul and Val, oh and Skul's powers dont feature that much, in fact i think you forgot just how cool he was meant to be. In Dark Days he had used all his time alone with the faceless ones to come up with new ways to use elemental magic. he flies, and makes flame streams instead of fireballs. and he says he can do lots more, but since then he pretty much just flies. He never did anything more with fire and never really does anything with water at all...
But mainly, Derek, explain what happened with the whole torturing tanith thing?!
Dont tell me you just forgot... :(

OK, the book's been out a couple of weeks now. Enough comments are there to tell you . So, if you haven't figured it out yet... then think. There are signs throughout the series. It's skulduggery's secret. Someone mentioned the end of Mortal Coil. Be smart and figure it out, or go read the book. One thing that confused me though, regarding this secret... Why didn't skul do something about being trapped after book 3? Hopefully, that's not enough to get deleted...

I know this might be old news, but there's no need to post all your hate for the book on here. If you don't like the book, so be it. But a lot of us did. And while some things in Death Bringer may not have been perfect, the book was still amazing. As was Mortal Coil. We don't need to hear about how some people despised the book, because you can go complain to someone else. You don't need to be quite so rude, especially not to the author directly. I just felt that that needed to be said to SOME people.

Valkyrie V. - Ivy said...

Matex Von Darkhour - マテクス said...

yes i wondered about the whole remnant and sanguine as being torture but i dont know that it really counts, i read the whole book waiting for tanith to make an appearance, coz i know she had to make an appearance and get hurt. in the back of my mind i thought that maybe the torture was to be off somewhere with billyray with a remnant inside her, but i was hoping shed appear and get hurt like she has in every book. So i was kinda disapointed when it was over and she hadnt made an appearance. Other than that the book was amazing, just found that one thing disapointing. Ofcourse to be logical it makes sense that a subplot with tanith didnt have its space in the book, but i was still waiting..

I've read it too! YAY! I reread it! YAY! I had a dream about it! O...K??? No but really I did. At the end of page 394, I drempt that Valkyrie's parents were in and heared her slam the door (btw just a dream so no expecting it from the book even though it's the best dream ever) and came out on the landing. And saw the skeleton. And screamed and ran back inside their room, then back out again with a baseball bat. (Not sure why they even had a baseball bat in their room but oh well). They start gasping and stuttering and going "who... wha... how...." then Sklduggery goes "look, there's a perfectly reasonable expla-" then just turns and darts into the imaginary room at the end of the dream corridor. The Valkyrie comes out in her work clothes and starts saying "listen, mum, dad, i want you to meet-" but then you hear skulduggery's voice from the room he ran in (for some reason) "Why didn't you ever tell me there's no window in here?!" kind of like a bored parent would yell up at their kid that breakfast is ready. Valkyrie goes, in a voice kind of like a bored kid would yell down at their parents that they're not hungry "try the next one" then Skulduggery comes out saying "sorry about this" and goes into another room. Valkyrie sighs and says "for a couple of years now--" but Skulduggery interrupts "It's locked! Can I blast it off?" "No" says Valkyrie "Try the front door" and Skulduggery walks PAST Valkyrie's parents saying "sorry about all this" and goes to the front door "It's locked again!" he yells "blast it then!" Valkyrie yells and he blasts it off by pushing at the air, tilts his head at her parents and walks off. I swear I was laughing in my sleep! That was the most hilarious dream I've ever ever had and It's all thanks to Derek! Thank you Derek!

I don't think you quite get the whole "spoilers spoil the book for the rest of us who haven't read it" thing. Did you read my dream, Miss Votolato? It was funny and I'm pretty sure I was laughing in my sleep. I am now calm and will do funny omming noise to stay that way with my legs crossed...

ommmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

AAAAA I'm floating! *falls to floor in pain* ow

yeah well anyway, read this:

It's good. It really is. It's Skulduggery-based. That's what makes it good. (Damn sometimes I want Derek's ego!)

P.S: I'm kind of woried about Kenny. No, not him but what he'll do. DON'T DO IT, KENNY! Ok, back to omming.

First paragraph of story- my spoiler for my own work:

I was in the house, in my room like always, listening to some of my favorite White Stripes songs when there was a terrible scream. That was it- my life turned around by one sound. If Dad hadn't have screamed then I'd never have gone down to see what it was, and I'd never have seen his murderer- a tall, dark man with twinkling eyes and a terrible expression of hatred on his face. He held a gun at my Dad's bleeding head and all I could do was scream and run away. I'd never seen a gun before. We lived in a part of the world where there's no sorcerers or magic for miles and we were just living peacefully when he was just... there, with a gun to my head. My heart was absolutely pounding and my thoughts were racing. Black tears were streaming down my pale face. My own Dad! Now gone forever. I should have ran for the door but I wasn't thinking straight. I remembered how hard it was for Dad to catch me while we played tag in the house together if I ran up the staircase...

Question: why was skulduggery there the night Valkyrie was attacked in the first book?????

Kribu said...

I wondered too, but I assumed he was just keeping an eye on Gordon's mansion as he knew or had good reason to assume that Gordon didn't die of natural causes? So perhaps he was just hanging around outside, waiting to see if anyone would turn up / try to break in?

The Wannabe-Author said...

I think he was trying to find the key.

Rebella Sadistic said...

If he was trying to find the key, why? its not like he wanted the key. unless he had something to hide? Maybe he was from the future and wanted to protect val? Oh Golden God! an answer would be nice! please?

Kribu said...

Did he even know there was a key before Stephanie was attacked / she told him about it?

My guess is still that he knew / had a hunch that Gordon was murdered for *something* and that someone might turn up at some point to look for it.

Either that or he was just bored and stalking his good old dead friend's house for a few days and nights seemed like the best way to spend some time.

Rebella Sadistic said...

If Val does die, like Ghastlys mother said(do we ever get to find out her name?) i always imagined him answering that question while she died in his arms.

Matex Von Darkhour - マテクス said...

Skulduggery had no idea there was a key, it wasnt until after he saved Val that they went to see China and she told them the rumours that Serpine was looking for the Sceptre.
Val does ask Skulduggery why he was there but he doesnt answer, because he doesnt want her to be involved.
He knew nothing about the sceptre but he already suspected Serpine was the one who killed Gorden because they later explain that he was investigating Gordons murder, he just didnt want to say that to Valkyrie.

Any reason Derek said this is the only place we can post spoilers, but then never comes back to answer our questions? :|

Hello!

Are we allowed to mention the Big Twist Spoiler here now, I wonder? I know we weren't at first, but as the book has been out over two months now, and this post should be sufficiently far back so that people don't accidentally stumble across the comments...

Valkyrie V. - Ivy said...

I'm here now!

Ayla O' Reardon said...

Hi!

And Bye!

I have to go :(

I'm going to go watch 'Big Bang Theory.'

Tis hillarious.

Byeee.

Valkyrie V. - Ivy said...

Bye Dess!

I'm mentioning the big twist. There's enough new posts so people won't come here, unless they're like us, in which case they'd have read the book. So here I go:

SKULDUGGERY PLEASANT IS LORD VILE.

Kribu said...

Ooh, you're brave. *approves*

Yes. And this is really the only reason why I think he *could* kill Darquesse if he had to... because we don't really know if he went all out in that battle in the end of Death Bringer, do we? I mean, it's possible he's even more powerful than that.

But would Skul want to go all Vile just to kill Darquesse? It would mean there's a pretty big chance he'll stay Vile, especially if he did manage to kill Darquesse (and thus had no Valkyrie to come back to), and that's not really all that much better for the rest of the world...

Valkyrie V. - Ivy said...

I think that Vile and Darquesse are going to battle each other again. And by the way, what was your reaction to the Vile thing? I screamed and almost started crying. I mean, I was just sitting there, open-mouthed, in pure, absolute, SHOCK. And then I ran through my house screaming, "NO NO NO NOT VILE ANYTHING BUT THAT!!!" and no one understood a word I was saying.

Valkyrie V. - Ivy said...

Wait, and aren't Darquesse and Vile pretty much BOTH trying to destroy the planet? Maybe they'll team up, or maybe they'll destroy the planet during a fight to the death.

Kribu said...

I'm quite sure they will, but I don't know if it's going to be the final battle to the death of one or both of them. Hmm.

And my reaction was... I think I just went frozen. And re-read that bit. And re-read it again. And mostly I was just... "whut."

I think I ran to the computer to tell my friend (who didn't have the book yet - I was lucky enough to find a shop that had it early) that I had to take a short break because of that Twist. And I couldn't tell her the details! I couldn't tell her, or anyone else, the details for DAYS! It was SO hard to keep it all to myself. :D

But yeah, I was really... hadn't expected that at all. And then I was so scared there for a bit, about whether this would ruin Val & Skul's friendship forever.

Valkyrie V. - Ivy said...

Well, Val did try to sulk him to death... And I thought it was hilarious that she suggested he go to a therapist. That was funny.

Kribu said...

Wait, and aren't Darquesse and Vile pretty much BOTH trying to destroy the planet?

Pretty much. Which is why I'm a bit wary of the idea of Skul going all Vile on her just to stop Darquesse, as even if he succeeded, if he couldn't then turn back into Skul (and after killing his best friend and partner, that might be a bit difficult), then that would mean letting Vile loose on the world...

Kribu said...

Well, Val did try to sulk him to death...

For all of three minutes or so. :D

I LOVED that chapter. That entire chapter. I think it's my favourite chapter in the entire series.

Valkyrie V. - Ivy said...

I thought that one was hilarious. It was amazing. Slightly creepy because Skulduggery saw Valkyrie's reflection... um, naked.... But it was hilarious.

(how'd you get the italics?)

Kribu said...

I am a shameless Val/Skul shipper, so that, uh, didn't bother me. Quite the opposite. :D

For italics, let's see... not sure if it works, so if not, I'll try to put it in some other way, but it's < i > text here < /i > without all the extra spaces.

Midnight Valentina said...

Hi everyone, I'm new, my name is Midnight Valentina, but call me Vee.

Kribu said...

Hello, Vee! It's nice to meet you!

Valkyrie V. - Ivy said...

Hi!

Were you guys scared when Skulduggery died again in the caves? I was. THAT WAS SCARY.

Midnight Valentina said...

Nice to meet you too! I'm a Valguine and Crackfic shipper ^_^ and proud of it. Heehee

Valkyrie V. - Ivy said...

I hated Melancholia, too. She is not a very nice person.

Kribu said...

I was worried. Really worried.

I mean, I told myself that "this is the title character of a series where there are three more books coming; he cannot die yet", so that made it easier, but... yeah. That one got me pretty bad.

Also, I did think for a moment there that everyone at the Ball *had* been killed for good. Now that would have been a majorly shocking twist, and not something I'd have expected.

Midnight Valentina said...

I was rather upset when Skulduggery died, I flipped. I hate Melancholia.

Kribu said...

And I want to know what all those hundred or thousand things were that Valkyrie wanted to tell Skulduggery before he went off to get killed! ARGH! We never found out!

Valkyrie V. - Ivy said...

I wasn't expecting the whole "go to Valkyrie's house and slash her to ribbons" thing either. That... That was creepy. Because, you know, I tell people I'm Valkyrie all the time, each of my friends have a character, and she's mine, so when I read that, it was pretty unsettling.

Valkyrie V. - Ivy said...

And I screamed when Valkyrie kissed Caelan again. I was HORRIFIED. That was just not right. And I was SO happy when he died, though... :D

Midnight Valentina said...

I found the Lord Vile fight scene rather interesting. It went into a completely new style or writing I wasn't even sure I liked reading until after when I said "That was flippin' awesome!"

Kribu said...

I was so pleased about Caelan dying, too. About time, really. :D

And yeah. Not really fond of Melancholia either. I wonder if we'll see her again.

Valkyrie V. - Ivy said...

I loved the line, "She had to stop him before he punched her brain out through her skull. She'd done that once. It was funnier when it happened to other people."

Kribu said...

Ohhhh. Did I just get the first on a new page? I'm supposed to dedicate it to something or someone, yes? Well, in that case, I'm dedicating it to the Golden God, Derek Landy, and all his minions, and the awesome books and characters that he's created!

Kribu said...

I loved that bit about the brain, too. And the whole fight, really, although it was rather gory... but gory in a good way. :D

Although that bit with the eye is probably going to haunt me forever.

Midnight Valentina said...

The eye thing was rather accurate though, in real life it would pop like that. When Caelan died I was shocked at first, but then I really didn't care. XD

I was sad that there wasn't any Tanith in this one though....

Kribu said...

I'm quite sure it was accurate. Which doesn't make it any less likely to haunt me. :D

I missed Tanith, too. I'm glad we got that Halloween story now, but I really hope she'll be back in some capacity in the next full book (i.e. the next actual book, not The End of the World).

I don't think there would have been any way to fit her into the Death Bringer storyline, not without introducing a whole extra little subplot, and the book was pretty long as it was.
